Algorithms are increasingly influencing outcomes that can have serious consequences for people, from fraud scoring and insurance claims to credit eligibility. But what happens when the algorithm gets it wrong? This session explores what fair and explainable AI looks like in high-stakes decision-making, including how outcomes are explained, what routes people have to challenge them and what POPIA requires when automated decision-making is involved. Drawing on MakwaIT’s work in insurance analytics, we’ll look at how organisations can harness AI without losing sight of accountability, transparency and the people affected.
